Integrated Innovation for Nuclear Decommissioning SBRI Competition Launched
This competition is issued under the IUK Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) and operates in conjunction with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd.
Over the next five years, the Sellafield Ltd business will undergo a major shift in focus as reprocessing ceases and decommissioning, waste management and site remediation assume increased priority. The estimated cost of decommissioning the site is around £85 billion and there are many opportunities to do things faster, more safely, and at a reduced cost.
Up to £3 million is being invested in projects that will integrate and demonstrate flexible innovative technologies for the nuclear decommissioning sector. Projects should produce a step change in the decommissioning or dismantling process and address the following objectives:
- Minimise human intervention
- Increase productivity
- Optimise waste treatment, packing and routing
Projects are sought that integrate technologies into a single platform or a small number of platforms. These should be able to demonstrate multiple tasks in the decommissioning process with minimum human intervention.
Application is open to organisations of any size who may work alone or in collaboration with others (ie business, research base and third sector). Applicants must demonstrate that their proposed idea has a credible and practical route to market.
The total budget for this competition is up to £3 million, to be divided across two phases (up to £400,000 for phase one and up to £2.6 million for phase two).
For phase one, projects can range in size up to a total cost of £50,000 and last for up to three months. Phase two projects can range in size up to a total cost of £1.5 million (larger projects may be considered on a case by case basis). Phase two projects should last up to 20 months.
The registration deadline is 12 noon, 19 April 2017 and the application deadline is 12 noon, 26 April 2017.
